A bitmap image is one of the two major graphic styles. These two major graphical types are Bitmap (also known as Raster) and Vector. Bitmap-based images consist of pixels in a grid. Each pixel or "bit" in the image contains information about the color to be displayed. Bitmap images have a fixed resolution and cannot be enlarged without losing image quality. Common bitmap-based formats include JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, PICT, and BMP. Most bitmap images can be converted to other bitmap-based formats very easily. All web browsers display bitmap/pixel-based graphics, a minor exception would be graphics that are part of a Flash Movie which are rendered in Vector format via a special Flash browser plug-in.
